The term "flapper" originated in the 1920s for women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, liked jazz music and didn't conform to "accepted" behavior. The flapper movement died out during the Great Depression of the 1930s but the movement helped empower women and also left behind some fashion trends that have come back into style.
A flapper dress is a short, strappy dress that is often low cut. Dresses were usually black but today can be found in a variety of colors. They also usually feature sequins or ruffles.
